Debian Sarge becomes Etch on my virtual server

Ok, for sys admins that actually pay attention, this is not news. Some time in April, the Debian stable version went through a distribution upgrade. Seeing that I upgrade/patch my servers whenever it occurs to me to do so, I'm 3 months behind. All I wanted to do was patch a few applications, and I noticed a few hundred packages in the queue waiting to be upgraded. Since I've pretty much stopped any development on the box in question, I figured wtf, why not do the major upgrade.

Well, as it turns out, a lot of things need a kernel upgrade (from linux 2.4 to 2.6) in order to work. Since this is a virtual server, I have no idea what kind of hardware this is supposed to be based on. I ended up dealing with tech support via email and they told me that the only way to upgrade the kernel on the virtual server was to do it from outside of the virtual machine. They said that they would take care of it and I told them to just send me an email before they were going to start, but not to wait on me to respond before commencing work. AFAIK, they haven't started yet. I've been ugrading various major packages as I see things that are broken. I just got apache upgraded to apache2, mysql upgraded to version 5 and php upgraded to version 5. This server has indeed been neglected.
